Sunstrike Optics LLC does custom design work for prototyping and fabricates 3D devices in glass (fused silica) with cross-sectional dimensions from a few microns and lengths up to 20 centimeters using femtosecond laser irradiation followed by selective etching. Example devices include light-pipes, tapers, and 45-degree surfaces. Devices for fixturing include the glass vacuum chuck and optical bench platform shown below. Fused silica has a very high temperature melting point, so the devices can withstand high temperatures that are not compatible with polymers materials. Glass also has low optical transmission over a broad range of wavelengths, from the ultraviolet through the near infrared.
